Quite often, the best approach to treating acne that works for one person does not work at all for another. Many people give up and just go on prescribed Accutane. But accutane is just like the other treatments: it works for some, and not for others. In addition, the medical community isn’t quite sure of the mechanism by which it works. If you are a sufferer, you may want to try some home remedies for acne first before moving on to stronger but potentially more dangerous drugs. There are multiple remedies out there, but here we will look at five that are commonly reported as being effective, at least anecdotally.
1. Vitamin A: This vitamin is known for its acne-fighting properties, and in fact the main prescription acne drug Accutane is based on vitamin A. The only problem with vitamin A supplementation is that it is fat soluble and hence is not flushed out of the body as easily as vitamin C and D. As a result, toxic amounts can build up in the body leading to bone problems, hair loss, dry skin, and a host of other problems. Therefore, caution must be used in taking supplements. Keep dosage below 10,000 IU per day.
2. Fish Oil: Omega 3 fatty acids contained in fish oil can promote healthy skin and oil production, leading to a possible reduction in acne. Fish oil contains the fatty acid EPA, which is essential for healthy skin. Most Western diets are deficient in this omega 3 acid, and thus supplementation is probably a wise choice. Benefits of fish oil also include anti-cancer effects and possibly promotion of well-being.
3. Soap: Reducing the use of soap may help some acne sufferers. Too much cleansing can actually cause the body to overproduce oil, which leads to more acne. Try just washing your face with warm water and no cleaners at all for a few weeks to see if you see any improvement.
4. Pillow Cases: Recently, there has been some interest in a remedy that involves either changing your pillow case nightly, or putting a new clean towel over your pillow nightly. Oil can build up in the pillow case and the pillow itself, and constant sleeping on it can stimulate the glands and cause infection and acne. Try buying a week’s worth of towels and changing it every night, cleaning them all at once at the end of the week.
5. Chocolate: The old stand-by of eliminating chocolate and other sweets from the diet may actually work for some people. Try also reducing use of grain and dairy. Some acne is caused at least partially by allergies to certain foods.
