Yoga for Weight Loss

One of the most common weight loss tips to encourage the quickest way to lose weight is to add exercise and fitness to your lifestyle. For many the idea that slow moving poses and stretching can lead to weight loss is a hard concept to accept. The no pain no gain attitude often keeps people from trying a method that promotes breathing, stretching and meditating on a mat to shed weight and build strong muscles. However, there are many benefits to adding yoga to your fitness routines here are just a few.

Reduce Stress
Yoga promotes slowing down and clearing your mind. Quiet meditation and clearing your mind of the daily stresses for just one hour can do your bodies a lot of good. Yoga teaches you to relax through breathing and slow rhythmic movements which promote stretching your muscles and building muscle tone.

Improve Strength and Flexibility
Cardio burns fat but another healthy weight loss must is building strong muscles and stretching regularly. Yoga forces you to no only stretch tired muscles but by holding a pose it promotes muscle strengthening as well.

Increase Circulation (Cardio)
There are forms of Yoga which may be called Power Yoga, Flow Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga which are all forms of Vinyasa yoga which provide a cardio workout as well. These classes often start with a series of sun salutations which increase blood flow and circulation in the body and each pose flows gently into the next increasing the heart rate and promoting fat burn.

Form of Detox
Each yoga pose has a specific meaning. Twisting poses promote elimination, upside down poses bring blood flow to the brain and salutation poses increase your heart rate. Many yoga practitioners believe that some yoga poses promote detox of toxins from the body. In addition, hot or Bikram yoga  promotes sweating as the practice is performed in a room with sauna like temperatures. This is said to help the body relax into each pose allowing you greater flexibility in the hot setting. But critics say that weight loss through hot yoga is due to the great loss in water from the extreme temperatures.

Adding yoga to your lifestyle does not have to be difficult. Find a class at a yoga center or community center, or get a DVD to practice from your own home. We are all encouraged to add exercise into our lives in order to lose weight faster so why not enjoy a quiet hour adding fitness to your day through the relaxing practice of Yoga.
